Senior Health Advisor
BBC Media Action

Sophia Wilkinson is Senior Health Advisor at BBC Media Action, the BBC’s international development charity. Sophia has twenty years’ experience working in the media, health and international development sectors, with particular expertise in health communication.

Sophia started her career as a radio journalist in Southeast Asia and the BBC World Service before completing an MSc in Development Practices. She joined BBC Media Action in 2003 to design and develop mass media social and behaviour change campaigns around HIV in Africa before shifting to the management of multi-media health and education projects.

Sophia later worked with the health promotion team of the UK’s leading HIV and sexual health charity, Terrence Higgins Trust. Between 2009 and 2012 she worked from India as a consultant on HIV, maternal and child health media projects, mainly on strategy and analysis. Sophia set up Bangalore’s first live relationships call-in advice show, aimed at improving emotional and sexual well-being before returning to BBC Media Action in 2012.

In her current role, she advises on the design and implementation of large-scale health communication interventions across Asia and Africa.
